Let's Move: How Afterschool Can Support Physical Activity in Kids

This session will describe the current rates of physical activity among children and adolescents and the importance of physical activity to health, learning, and social behaviors. We will focus on physical activity recommendations and how to reduce screen time in afterschool settings, using physical activity as a part of homework help or academic activities, and how to get kids to move during structured and unstructured play time. The session will also present alternatives for withholding physical activity time for misbehavior and the science behind why this is counterproductive.

We will discuss the Smart Snacks criteria used in schools and resources for healthier holiday parties, themed parties, and non-food rewards. You Can Dance if You Want To

Everyone is a dancer and can benefit through play and exploration in movement. In addition to heart health and improved gross motor skills, dance serves as a way to teach social-emotional skills, sequencing, math concepts, and storytelling. Performing can also enhance children’s confidence and self-esteem, which in turn fosters leadership skills. Join us to learn the three elements of dance, the eight basic locomotor movements, and how to structure and plan a dance activity or lesson in your afterschool program.

Captain CREATE MyPlate: Ready-to-Use

If you are looking for “ready to use” lessons that teach MyPlate nutrition, fun physical activity and healthy snacks, then this is the workshop for you! The curriculum has six lessons that are targeted to 1-3rd graders, but can be adapted for all elementary school ages. We will also share and practice tips and strategies for designing and delivering engaging lessons to elementary school students.
